Year 2 News 23.10.26
English
We have enjoyed writing about our veggie superheroes and veggie villains this week. We prepared for our writing by doing some talk activities. We got into groups of 3 and practised being a describer, a questioner and a summariser. The summariser had a tricky job of listening to all of the information then summarising what they knew about the other person’s character.
The children have impressed us with their writing, applying new skills taught such as creating expanded noun phrases by choosing two adjectives before a noun e.g. shiny, orange boots or long, red cape.
Spelling
This week we have been looking at the different ways to spell ‘igh’.
During parents evening, we were asked about what parents should ‘correct’ in terms of spellings. In year 2 the expectation is that children are able to spell many common exception words (see below) and segment spoken words into phonemes and represent these by graphemes, spelling many of these words correctly and making phonically plausible attempts at others. What this means is that children need to be able to use their phonic knowledge to sound out words when spelling.
Maths
In maths this week we have continued with addition and subtraction. We have added 3 one digit numbers, looking for a pair to ten first and have also looked at making a ten and crossing a ten when adding.
Today we enjoyed some maths games, applying our number bonds.
DT
We have designed our own picture with a moving mechanism. The children needed to think about what needed to be on their background, and what needed to be added as a moving part!
