Phonics

We are continuing to revise all the sounds learnt so far. Our new hard to read and spell words are some, come and there. Can your child use these words in a sentence?

Every day the children are sounding out and spelling words using all the sounds we have learnt. We then practice writing a sentence which has our new hard to read and spell word in. We are doing so well to remember to start writing on the left, sitting letters on the line and to remember capital letters and full stops.

Maths

This week the children have continued to engage with activities that draw attention to the purpose of counting – to find out ‘how many’ objects there are. They have practised and developed their knowledge of the counting sequence. The children are now more confident when counting out a set of objects from a larger set, remembering the ‘stopping number’ and knowing that this means they have selected the correct number. We have also had lots of opportunities to practise counting beyond 20.

Understanding the World – Why are some objects special?

Over the last two weeks our focus was on objects that are special to Jewish people. We found out that the Thora is a special and holy book for Jewish people. We discovered that it is written on scrolls, which are kept in beautiful wrappings. We learned that the Thora is written in Hebrew, and we listened to some words in Hebrew. We also learned that Jewish people have a mezuzah on their door. This is a special box that contains a tiny scroll with words from the Thora. The children then made their own mezuzah and put a special message inside.
