The Royal Armouries!

Roman Workshop!

As part of our day, the children took part in two exciting workshops, one of which focused on the Romans. This hands-on session brought history to life as the children met a Roman soldier who shared insights into life in the Roman army. He explained the purpose of the different pieces of armour worn by Roman soldiers and how each item helped to protect them in battle. The children were amazed to learn how heavy and practical the equipment needed to be.

During the workshop, everyone became part of a Roman army. The children were taught to march like Roman soldiers and practised following commands, moving left and right in formation under their leader’s guidance. This proved to be more challenging than expected! Roman soldiers were expected to look serious and disciplined at all times, so any children caught smiling were quickly reminded by the soldiers to keep a stern expression!

The children also learned about the different shield formations used by Roman soldiers to defend themselves during battle. They discovered how soldiers worked together to create strong defensive lines and even explored the famous testudo, or “tortoise” formation. One of the highlights of the session was the opportunity to hold replica Roman shields and swords. Lots of children were surprised by how heavy the equipment was and gained a new appreciation for the strength and endurance required from Roman soldiers.

To put their new skills into practice, the children worked together to form battle formations and defend themselves against incoming attacks. The excitement rose even higher when the teachers joined in, throwing foam axes at the formations! The children did a good job of protecting themselves and their fellow soldiers. It was a fun workshop that gave everyone an insight into what life might have been like for a Roman soldier. (We are pleased to report that no children were harmed during these battles!)

Boudicca
Next, it was story time! We already knew a little about the Iceni tribe from our classroom learning, but during the trip, we had the chance to hear the exciting story of Boudicca’s revolt against the Romans. The children sat together in a circle and stepped into role, deciding whether to support Boudicca and wear woad, or to join the Roman side.

Thank you to all staff and volunteers that have helped us with our visits this term.
