Stone Age Day!

Year 3 have had a brilliant week, writing their own stories, learning more about the Bronze Age and travelling back in time to the Stone Age! On Wednesday, we stepped back thousands of years as Year 3 became Stone Age children! Throughout the day, we took part in a range of exciting activities to learn more about what life was like during this period.

Cave Paintings
Year 3 enjoyed learning all about cave paintings and how people used them thousands of years ago to tell stories and share information. We looked at cave paintings from around the world and discovered that children found some famous paintings! We explored the pictures and spotted lots of interesting animals, symbols and handprints. After this, it was our turn to become prehistoric artists! Using card and pastels, we created our own cave paintings, experimenting with different colours and patterns. Some children told stories, while others drew animals or created a family of handprints.

Dance
We took part in a dance and drama session as tribes hunting animals using 5 different movements; turn, travel, jump, gesture and stillness.

Archery
Mr Harris led a brilliant archery session, helping children develop their aim and have a go at hitting a target! Working in small groups, they learned how to hold the bow and arrow safely before carefully aiming at a target – a friendly deer! Don’t worry, we can confirm that no real animals were harmed during our Stone Age adventure!

Fire
Making a fire is harder than it looks! After learning why Stone Age people needed fires, we headed outside to have a go ourselves using a flint tool, cotton wool and a small shell. Despite the windy conditions, some of us managed to create a spark! We discovered just how much patience and skill it took to make and maintain a fire thousands of years ago.
