Phonics
Our tricky word this week is ‘was’. Can your child say this word in a sentence? Can they write this word? Can they spot it in any of their books?
We have also learnt the phonemes/ graphemes ‘zz‘ and ‘qu‘. Can you use your phonic flashcards to make words that have ‘zz’ and ‘qu‘ in?
We also enjoyed singing this tricky word song. You can join in at home too.
Maths
A key focus this week has been the stable order principle – rehearsing the order of the first 5 numbers and understanding that the position each number holds in our number sequence does not change. The children have enjoyed looking in detail at the Numberblocks and creating ‘stair patterns’. They have spent time discovering that each number has a value of 1 more than the previous number. Using blocks and squares to order quantities from 1 to 5 has helped to embed this key understanding.
We have also been using ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.) alongside these ordering activities and as part of our classroom routines.
They all enjoyed this episode of Numberblocks.
Going into Space
We have been reading this non-fiction book this week. We have shown the children how to use a contents page. The children have enjoyed learning lots of facts about space.
The children have been exploring Google Earth and learning all about the planets. We have loved listening to this song to help us remember all the planet names.
The children have done some super writing about space in their Busy Bee books.
We have had lots of messy fun making paper mache planets!
RE
This week we have been looking at rules – what rules you might have at home and how you are helpful at home. Thank you for all the photographs sent in for the homework task, the children have enjoyed sharing them. We then looked at how we can be helpful at school and in our classroom and thought of some rules.
