The week before ‘The Week’

Good evening. It has been another normal week in Year 5 apart from 1001 questions which have started with, “On residential, …”. The most exciting week of the year is just around the corner and the enthusiasm of all the children has been wonderful to see. We aim to give them memories that will endure and skills that will last a life time, including making their own beds! That will be the hardest task of the week and photos will be shared, along with all the other activities, every evening. Please be patient for the updates as these may be late (towards midnight usually) as we have very packed days.

In other news

English

This week, we have started to look at pursuasive writing. Our first lesson was writing a letter to Mr Harris asking him to consider x, y, z. There were a few options for the topic of the letter (before his announcement today) and were all really well written. 5B were given the option of requesting that sweets were allowed on residential, but unfortunatley these were not passed on in time for him to read!

Maths

Decimals is the new topic, with addition and subtraction the focus. This has been generally well understood but as a reminder, there is a video below that will help with the concept of decimal calculations.

Geography

We have been preparing for the residential by looking at maps and learning how to read 4 and 6 figure grid references. These have been based on the Malham area (our next trip after we have all recovered from Gearstones!). One of the activities we will undertake next week is a night walk, with the children leading by following OS maps. Navigating using one, is a very useful skill, which will test both classes. Let’s see what we find as we go around.

Finally

Residential week is a nervous week for children and adults alike. If there are any queries over the weekend, please feel free to email me at nic.beevers@farsleyfarfield.org.uk Reminder – We post updates every evening with plenty of photos

Have a great weekend

Mr Beevers and Mrs Kroon
