Year 2 News 28.6.24

It has been another brilliant week in Year 2 and we have lots of learning to share with you!

English

We have started a new unit of work on poetry based around minibeasts. We began the week by looking at different word classes (nouns, adjectives and verbs) and collected vocabulary specific to different minibeasts. We had to think carefully about right choice words and whether they would paint a clear picture for the reader. We then looked at the structure of a diamante poem and using the language we had collected, had a go at writing our own.

Maths

We have ended our work on statistics by looking at pictograms and how data can be represented using a range of keys. We were challenged to interpret data that used keys of 2s, 5s and 10s which put our counting to the test. We then had a go at creating our own pictograms to show different data.

Well done to 2BW for winning the Year 2 Times Table Rockstars battle with 9,689 points. A special shout out to Zyan, Bonnie and Alisha in 2BW and Aarjay, Madison and Maryam in 2LA for achieving the most valuable player certificates.

Art

Linking to our work on minibeasts, we have put our technical drawing skills to the test this week and had a go at copying a picture of a butterfly or dragonfly. We had to look carefully at the size and shape of the minibeast as well as adding lots of detail to our drawings. Look how wonderful they are! We are looking forward to having a go at a second draft next week to see if we can improve our skills.

Geography

This week, we put our map reading skills to the test as we went in search of some hidden cones. The cones each had letters on them that together spelt a secret word. We had to orientate our maps carefully to ensure we were walking in the right direction around the school grounds.

Science Superstars

Well done to everyone who auditioned for the Science Superstars. We had some amazing experiments with children explaining what they were doing well and using super science vocabulary. Congratulations to Shivam and Ihsaan who will be representing Year 2 in the final in a few weeks time. Good luck!

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 2 Team
