Phonics
In phonics we have continued to revise all the hard to read and spell words. We have looked at words which end in ‘ed‘ like camp – camped, pick – picked, swoop – swooped. We have talked about how when we say words like picked and swooped it sounds like there is a ‘t’ at the end, but it is spelt with an ‘ed’.
This week has seen the start of us doing handwriting lessons. The children have started with the curly caterpillar letters (all the letters which start with a curl) – c, a and o. They have impressed us with their pencil grip and size of letters!
Maths
In Maths the children have developed their subitising skills (seeing the quantity without counting) in different arrangements. They have developed an understanding of doubles to support their subitising skills. We have also discussed when children can use their subitising skills and when they might need to use counting as a strategy.
Understanding the World/Geography
In the Autumn term we started to look at our homes and each child drew a picture of their home. This week we have been exploring our school grounds and where our school is on Cote Lane. The children started with their own personal Geography and now they are looking at school and where it is so they can create a map of Cote Lane. The children noticed how different the houses were. We may have also had a little time to explore the park on Cote Lane too!
Over the next few weeks we will look at Farsley, Leeds, United Kingdom and the World.
Understanding the World/RE
Over the last couple of weeks we have looked at rules and being helpful. The children learned that we follow rules so everyone is safe and equal. We learned that the Golden Rule, treating others like you want to be treated yourself, is very important in lots of different religions. We then looked at being helpful. The children loved talking about their photos and making a book that shows how helpful everybody is at home or at school.
PE
This week we focussed on holding a balance with a partner and working as a team to get across the hall. The children had some hoops and had to work out how they could use them to cross the hall without anybody stepping outside of the hoops. The children really impressed us with their cooperation. We also pretended to be penguins and carried our eggs (beanbags) between our feet or knees to drop them into a hoop.
Harlow Carr
Just a reminder that RKT class will be going to Harlow Carr on Tuesday 5th May (first day after the bank holiday). RPT will be going on Friday 8th May. The weather looks dry but a waterproof coat will be needed. The children will need a packed lunch and a drink. Please no NUT products or any products that contain nuts, like Nutella.
