Welcome to Year 6!

We have had a lovely few days getting to know our new classes and have been impressed with the positive way the children have approached their new school year and their determined and mature attitudes already on display.

We hope you received a paper copy of our newsletter this week. For your information, a PDF can be found here:

English

We have begun reading our class text for this half term: Kensuke’s Kingdom. This week the children were inference detectives and looked carefully at images and the clues within the first chapter to make some excellent predictions about the themes and events of the story. The classes then had to decide whether they would have encouraged the characters to take a trip around the world on a boat – and not everyone thought they should have gone! Fortunately for the plot in our story, the characters set off on their journey and we are excited to find out what awaits them out on the open sea…

Maths

We have made a good start to our maths work and have been looking at place value in numbers and some arithmetic work. Arithmetic will make up a substantial part of our learning this term but please don’t worry if it is currently a little challenging. We haven’t even begun to cover the strategies we will need yet, all we want is positivity and an improvement every week as we learn a little more.

We have noticed that some of our times tables knowledge needs working on so would like children to continue using TT Rockstars to support this. Times tables underpin lots of the learning in upper KS2 and if the children find this area tricky lots of other concepts become hard.
