Week 6: Harvest, History and Stone Age Storytelling in Year 3!
We’ve had another lovely week in Year 3, diving into a range of subjects, with plenty of independent writing, creative thinking, and problem-solving. Friday was a special day as we celebrated Harvest with a morning assembly filled with jokes, singing and gratitude. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all the families who kindly donated food – your generosity is greatly appreciated, and it will make a big difference to those in need. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to this week!
Maths
This week in Maths, we continued working with the White Rose Maths scheme, focusing on:
- Adding and subtracting 100s – The children worked on this using both practical and written methods, improving in their ability to manipulate three-digit numbers.
- Spotting patterns – We explored how adding and subtracting affects different place values and challenged the children to find patterns that help them work out sums more easily.
- Adding 1s across a 10 – This tricky concept required the children to add numbers across the tens boundary. Children had to find ways of making a bond to 10 from the ones they were adding together. 3CW had a little extra practise on this, but with persistence the children showed some great understanding!
- 3B also managed to move on to Adding 10s across a 100, working on how the tens digit changes when crossing the hundreds boundary.
RE
In RE this week, Class 3B enjoyed learning more Jewish artefacts and the significance of their place of worship. The children were fascinated as they examined different objects and asked several curious questions. We discussed what a synagogue is and why it’s an important place of worship for Jewish people. By the end of the lesson, the children were confidently identifying various artefacts and explaining their purposes – a great success!
History – Life in the Stone Age
In History, we have been learning about the difference in housing throughout the Stone Age. Children shared their ideas about the way that they lived during the Paleolithic times and how this changed in the Neolithic period. They worked together and enjoyed making Mesolithic homes and travelling across the room collecting information about Skara Brae.
English
This week in English, we focused on independent writing, with the children re-writing the ending of the story of Stone Age Boy. Over 4 lessons this week, the students were tasked with writing an alternative ending, including a visit to a new exciting world!
We explored different sections of the story together:
- Cave Description – The children referred back to their previous work on describing caves and were encouraged to use the same rich detail.
- Falling Down – Before starting this section, the children discussed their ideas for how we might act and feel if the floor opened up and we started to fall down, down, down.
- New Setting Description – The children were asked to describe this new setting with as much detail as they did for the cave. We journeyed to the future, Candy Land, Kitty World, the Mesozoic era, and more!
- Linking Back to the Stone Age Adventure – 3CW wrapped up our writing session by thinking about how their characters might notice something that ties back to the Stone Age setting. 3B will be finishing their stories next week.
It was fantastic to see them applying their learning from previous weeks, using vivid descriptions and thoughtful storytelling to bring their adventures to life!
PE – Indoor Circuits and Multi-skills
The rain, cold, and wet weather caught up with us this week. While we had to adjust our plans, the children stayed active by participating in a mixture of indoor circuits, yoga, and a HIIT class. However, the brave souls in the Multi skills class ventured outdoors to continue practising their skills despite the weather!
Homework
This week’s homework will be to practise homophones in sentences and adding/subtracting 1s across a 10. Here is a great poster to help children remember how to use these homophones correctly.
Important Reminders
Year 3 have been excited to learn that they are a step closer to taking their Chromebooks home! This week, we have sent letters which must be signed and returned, and children must bring in a Chromebook case in order to take them home.
Please remind children to have their reading records ready when they’re reading to an adult at home each day. They are expected to read at least 5 times per week.
