The rain (pretty much) held off for our sports day on Wednesday morning. The children did a FANTASTIC job of representing their hive teams, showing real determination, resilience and great sportsmanship in what was a great, competitive event. We hope you enjoyed watching as buckets were filled with water, beanbags carried on heads, eggs were balanced on spoons and speed and agility were put to the test!

Brilliant Bees
This week, we welcomed beekeeper, Kitt, to school. She showed us an example of a beehive with frames that showed pictures of what the bees would look like in it. Some of us even managed to spot the queen bee! Kitt then explained how the hive works and the different parts it is made up of. We had a look at the super, brood and queen excluder and even saw what a frame filled with honeycomb looks like! We looked at some different types of honey and learnt that these differ depending on the flower the nectar has come from. Some of us even dressed up as beekeepers which was great fun!
In English, we have been creating our very own non-fiction books all about bees. We began by creating an eye-catching front cover that would appeal to KS1 readers then wrote an introduction to explain what our books are about. We have written about the different types of bee within a hive and the different parts of a hive using our new knowledge and setting our writing out carefully with subheadings and pictures. We have also learned about the different parts of a bee and created a labelled diagram. We enjoyed finding out about the life cycle of a bee and created a page on this too. We can’t wait to share the finished books with you!
Maths
We have finished our unit on position and direction. The children have put together movement and turns this week. They can look at characters on a grid and give directions such as move forwards 3 squares. Turn right. Move forwards 3 squares. Turn left. When we created shape patterns we included quarter turns and half turns. It was quite tricky!
DT
Finally, after weeks and weeks of planning and making, our glove puppets are finished! The children had to cut out the fabric from a template, sew together (using a running stitch or over stitch) and then stick on features to make them look like our chosen animals. The children love their finished puppets.
