Oh ‘deer’, fractions and decimals again!

Maths

This week we have started the new topic of Decimals and Percentages. One of the key concepts is the eqivalence of decimals and fractions. Tenths and hundreths are more easily understood but finding the decimal equivalent of 1/4 and 1/5 are trickier. The video below can help with this.

English

Our new class novel is the Explorer by Katherine Rundell. Over the next few weeks, we will be building up to writing our own adventure story so this week we have looked at ambitious vocabulary, including expanded noun phrases and powerful verbs and adverbs. Creating a picture in the head of the reader helps to engage them and adds to the reading experience. We will continue to add atmosphere next week by using similes and metaphors.

World Book Day

Just a reminder that Thursday next week is World Book Day. As in the past, we encourage children to come to school dressed as their favourite book character or, this year, showing off their hobby. We look forward to seeing and guessing what the costumes represent. There is also the book swap, mystery reader and vouchers. The full information can be found here.

Finally

As you may have seen on Mr Harris’ Headteacher blog, 5B’s guided reading lesson on Thursday was briefly interupted by a curious visitor in the access garden outside the classroom.

Unfortunatley, this magnificant animal thought better of joining us and probabaly went to munch on something tasty in the school farm instead.

Have a great weekend.
