Science

We are close to completing our pictures which tell the story of the creation of Earth. We read a beautifully illustrated book called ‘The story of life – A first book about evolution’. The children were then tasked with retelling the story and have produced some excellent pieces of work.

The finishing touches are being applied as we type so stay tuned for the full album of photos which we promise is coming next week. (Everyone wanted to share their work so we are waiting for anyone who hasn’t finished to have the chance to do so.)

We also listened to a funny song to help us learn about the process – here it is to watch in full

History – Farsley Airfield

Continuing on with our topic of WW1 the children were fascinated to learn this week that there was a WW1 refuelling station on our very own school field – you may have even noticed the plaque as you enter the school grounds? We looked at old maps to infer the reasons why it may have been chosen and learned that it was even considered as a site for Leeds Bradford Airport! We used an amazing booklet written by children from 2017 who were in Year 6 when the school was told about the airfield. If you would like to read it we have linked it here

Maths

This week we have continued our work on ratio. We have been teaching the children about scale factors, which show how a shape can be enlarged or reduced while keeping the same proportions. The children learned that a scale factor tells us how much each side length changes — for example, a scale factor of 2 doubles every side, while a scale factor of ½ halves them. We focused on multiplying or dividing side lengths by the scale factor and understanding that the shape looks the same, with angles staying equal, even though the size changes.

We have been really impressed with the children’s work in this area of the curriculum.
