Year 4 News – 3.7.26

English

In English we have started a short unit of work on poetry. We have been exploring haiku poems and learning about their structure. The children have been really interested in these and have quickly got the hang of how they work! 4SL had a go at writing some of their own today. While traditional haikus usually have a nature theme, we wrote about all sorts of topics, from summer, to sports day to the World Cup!

We have also begun learning the poem ‘From a Railway Carriage’ by Robert Louis Stevenson, ready for a poetry performance in the last week of term. Here are the words and a video of Michael Rosen reading the poem if any children would like to practise.

Faster than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
And charging along like troops in a battle,
All through the meadows the horses and cattle:
All of the sights of the hill and the plain
Fly as thick as driving rain;
And ever again, in the wink of an eye,
Painted stations whistle by.

Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,
All by himself and gathering brambles;
Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;
And there is the green for stringing the daisies!
Here is a cart run away in the road
Lumping along with man and load;
And here is a mill and there is a river:
Each a glimpse and gone for ever!

Music

4SL have been working on the song Frère Jacques for the last few weeks, working hard to sing and play in a round. Here are a couple of videos of the children’s work.

Year 4 have also been very sensible and engaged when completing their RSE lessons this week, and have been busy practising for sports day!

Summer Reading Challenge

We are encouraging children from Farfield to sign up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge! From tomorrow, children can register for the challenge at their local library. Can we beat our Farfield record of 78 participants? Celebrate the National Year of Reading by taking part. Children who complete the challenge will receive a medal and certificate. We would love to see these in special mention assemblies after the holidays!
