Year 1 – 15.03.24

Phonics

In phonics this week we have revised split digraphs. We have also began to look at sound families which are groups of graphemes that all make the same sound. This week we have concentrated on a-e/ai/ay, ea/ee/e-e/ey and ie/i-e/igh. The children are really enjoying the phonic detective sheets and finding out who the phonic detective of the day is! Please take time to complete the sheet at home.

English

In English we have continued to work on our senses booklets. This week we have written about the sense of touch and sense of sight. We have also completed our front covers.

In handwriting we practised forming the letters M,N,O and P.

We also used our reading dogs to answer questions about a non-fiction text all about our bones!

Maths

This week we have been focussing on the number line to 50 and one more and one less to 50. The children have been using number lines and base 10 to support their understanding. We have been applying our knowledge to reasoning and problem solving questions. Here is one to try at home.

Science

In science we investigated the enquiry question ‘What differences can our tongue taste?’ We tried eight different flavours including lemon juice, marmite, pickled onions, olives, crisp, sweets, strawberry sauce and dark chocolate. The children then decided if the taste was sweet, sour, bitter or salty.

PSHE

In PSHE we thought about what we put on our skin and why sometimes we need to put things on our skin like sun cream to keep us safe and healthy. We also spoke about how not everything is safe for our skin and how we should always ask a grown up first.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
