Week One – Welcome to Year 5

Week One – Welcome to Year 5

Good evening. Welcome to the parents new to Year 5 and welcome back to those who have had children in the year group previously.

Firstly, we must say that we have been genuinely impressed by the way the children have settled into their new classes. New teachers, new routines and expectations are never easy, but both classes have took the first week in their stride.

We started with a gentle get to know you day on Tuesday, with some curriculum work in the afternoon. 5B started with the history topic, which this term is The Ancient Greeks. During this lesson we used maps to locate modern day Greece and Chromebooks to research information about climate, traditions and the cuisine. 5KH completed a science lesson investigating the planets that make up the solar system, drawing them and recording any amazing facts they found.

This week we have also started reading our class novel Percy Jackson and the Lighning Thief. Using this book as an inspiration, the children then planned and wrote their own adventure story. This was just a warm up for the work still to come, but was still great to read.

In Maths, we are focusing on place value, using numbers into the thousands. We have also extended our knowledge of Roman Numerals up to M. If you are a bit rusty at sorting out your Ls from your Cs, click here.

Finally, your child should have come home with a newsletter, detailing the upcoming year, this week, but in case it has been ‘misplaced en route’ you can find it by clicking here.

We are looking forward to seeing all the children on Monday (in PE kits) and having another great week.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 5 team.
