Maths
This week, we have continued our learning about place value. We began by recapping number lines to 1,000 and practised estimating where different numbers would go when given different starting and ending values. We then moved on to comparing and ordering numbers. The children used their understanding of place value to decide which numbers were greater than, less than or equal. They also practised using the <, > and = symbols to show their answers.
English
This week, the children explored diary entries. They shared their ideas about the key features of a diary and worked together to identify these in a short diary extract. Using our class text, Stone Age Boy, the children then planned their own diary entry from a Stone Age perspective, imagining what they might do during a day in the Stone Age. We ended the week by writing our own diary entries, making sure to include key features such as first person writing, thoughts and feelings, and events in chronological order. The children enjoyed bringing their Stone Age experiences to life through their writing!
Science
This week, the children enjoyed an experiment investigating whether rocks are permeable and what might make some rocks more permeable than others. Working in groups, the children observed a range of different rocks as they were placed into water. They carefully watched to see how long the rocks took to reach the bottom and whether any bubbles appeared. They then discussed their observations and used them to help explain their findings.
PSHE
This week, our learning focused on tobacco and the effects smoking can have on the body. The children shared their ideas and developed their understanding of how smoking can affect different parts of the body. They used what they learned to label a body diagram, explaining the possible effects of smoking, and finished the lesson with a tobacco quiz to test their knowledge.
French
Year 3 have been enjoying learning French! This week, the children practised how to say hello and learned how to ask each other how they are. They had lots of fun putting their new French skills into practice and having simple conversations with their classmates. We’re looking forward to learning even more French together!
