Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 1 – 01.03.24

Phonics

In phonics this week we have looked at silent letters. We learnt that when a ‘k’ or ‘g’ is followed by a ‘n’ the k and g are silent.

We also looked at compound words. We learnt that compound words are two words that come together to make a new word. For example ‘star’ and ‘fish’ come together to make ‘starfish’.

Science

In science we learnt about the five senses and which body part is related to each sense. We eliminated our sense of sight by closing our eyes and used our sense of hearing, smell, taste and touch to try and identify four different objects.

English

In English we continued to use our senses to explore different objects.

We came up with lots of adjectives to describe how an object looks, feels, sounds, tastes and smells. We then used these adjectives to write some fantastic sentences. The children are becoming really confident in using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in their writing. They have also been working hard on their letter formation.

In handwriting we have practised forming the capital letters EFG and H.

Maths

In maths we have continued with our work on addition and subtraction. We have been using part-whole and bar models to write related addition and subtraction facts. We have also been applying our knowledge to missing number problems. The children have been working hard to develop their reasoning and problem solving skills. Here is a problem to try at home.

PSHE

We have been discussing what types of things might go inside our bodies in PSHE. We talked about food, water, medicine, vaccines, eye drops and ear drops. We spoke about how we sometimes need to put these things in our body to keep us healthy. We discussed how important it is for us to only put things in our body that an adult has told us is ok and safe. We spoke about how it is never safe to put some things in our bodies. The children then sorted pictures into safe and not safe.

Computing

In computing, we continued with our work on algorithms. This week the children used a programme called ‘bubbles’ on Purple Mash. The activity is available for your child to complete at home if they wish.

Art Gallery

Thank you to all parents/carers who managed to come to our Art Gallery. It was lovely sharing the children’s work with you all.
