Maths
This week, we developed our partitioning and place value skills. The children used maths apparatus and part-whole models to partition numbers up to 1,000 in different ways, including exchanging hundreds and ones. We then practised finding 100, 10 and 1 more or less than a given number. This was tricky at times, as the children had to focus carefully on the changing digit. To finish the week, we explored number lines up to 1,000, identifying the value of numbers and partitioning them into different parts. We also began exploring division by 10. Next week, we will continue developing our understanding of number lines.
English was fun because…
This week, we focused on subordinating conjunctions and clauses. A subordinating conjunction, such as because, when, if, although or while, helps us to add extra information to a sentence. The children worked both independently and collaboratively to identify subordinating conjunctions and clauses before practising using them in their own sentences. Although this was a tricky concept at times, the children showed great perseverance and became more confident as the week progressed. At the end of the week, the children read through sentences and swapped the clauses around, thinking carefully about where to add the correct punctuation. This helped them to further develop their understanding of how subordinating clauses can be used in different ways.
Science
Which rock would be best for a statue in our playground? That was the question we investigated in science this week! The children selected different types of rock and carried out a series of tests, including scratching the rocks with a nail and testing them against other rocks. They used their observations to compare the rocks and decide which would be most suitable for a playground statue, considering its ability to withstand different weather conditions and everyday play. The children enjoyed being scientists and using evidence from their investigation to support their ideas!
PSHE
This week in PSHE, the children learned about drugs and medicines. They started by sharing their own ideas and what they already knew before learning more about the difference between helpful and harmful drugs. The children discussed how some medicines can help us when used correctly, while other substances can harm our bodies.
School council
Year 3 had an exciting end to the week as it was all about School Council! The children enjoyed putting themselves forward and sharing why they would make a great representative. We heard some brilliant ideas about how they could help make a difference in school, including organising litter picks, creating posters and listening to others at break time to make sure everyone feels heard and supported. It was fantastic to see the children confidently sharing their ideas and thinking about how they can contribute to our school community. Well done to Mabel and Theo!
