I have been thinking about a sense of belonging this week. Year 4 have been creating shields with symbols of those things that mean most to them or that they feel define them. Icons relating to X Box and Playstation were quite prevalent, but so were family, friends, religion and clubs that the children belong to: cubs, brownies, dance, gym and football clubs. At school, and across the city, many of the children doing least well at school, attending school less well and having social and emotional issues are those that don’t appear to have that sense of being part of a positive local community and having reliable friendships (in and out of school) and consistently appropriate adult relationships.  As a city, we are going to try to focus on ‘achievement’ in its broadest sense for our most vulnerable young people and engagement in extra curricular activity – both in school and in the community – will be one aspect of this.

Our school community will be coming together tomorrow for our spectacular annual camp-over. About 60 families are camping and well over 400 people are expected on site at some point during the day.  With sun set to shine yet again, this is a really important community coming-together for our children (and adults). I hope everyone has a fantastic day!
