English

This week we started our English with a trip to the Arctic! We packed our bags then boarded our ship. there were lots of jobs to do. When we arrived at the Arctic, we set up base camp and started to explore. We saw polar bears, walrus, icebergs and we even spotted the northern lights. When we were out exploring, we discovered a baby penguin- we were so confused as we know that penguins live in Antarctica! We found out that he was lost and we decided to help him get back to his home.

We then wrote sentences about what we had seen. We practised using expanded noun phrases. Next we wrote a setting description for the Arctic. the children wrote some really detailed descriptions. Well done!

Today we read a story called ‘Poles Apart’. It was about a family of penguins who got lost in the Arctic whilst out for a picnic! Luckily they met a friendly polar bear who offered to take them back home to Antarctica. next week, we will continue to explore this story.

Spellings

This week we have been learning about words with the n/kn/gn spelling.

Maths

We have finished our addition and subtraction topic! Children showed what they had learned through completing an assessment of mixed addition and subtraction questions. We were very impressed! Keep practising at home- in Year 2 we need to be able to add and subtract two 2 digit numbers.

We have started our shape topic. Children remembered the basic shapes they learned in Year 1 and we have started to learn some more. This week we have focused on 2D shapes and have counted sides and vertices (corners).

Geography

This week in geography we talked to the children about global warming and how this is changing the polar regions. We talked about how the polar ice caps are melting and how this is affecting the animals who live there. We looked at ways that we can all help at home. The children were able to say what they would try to do to help save the polar bears.
