Year 5 Blog 17.11.23

Good afternoon parents and carers,

We have had another exciting and hard working week in Year 5. Amongst other things, we have begun rehearsals for the Christmas pantomime, which is very exciting!

English

In English we have been reading about Curiosity a Mars Rover. We are currently building vocabulary and skills ready to explain how our own Mars Rover will work.

Maths

In Maths we have finished work on Multiplication and Division for the time being and are now about to begin work on fractions. The children finished off multiplication and division by using multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 to solve calculations such as:

3 x 24, 30 x 24, 24 x 300 and 30 x 240.

24 ÷ 3, 240 ÷ 3, 240 ÷ 30, 2400,÷ 30.

Science

In science we finished work on The Earth and the Solar system by looking at the lunar cycle. We placed a half black, half white ball in the middle of our circle and drew what we could see.

In 5KH we have now begun work on our next science topic of forces. We investigated Aristotle and Gallileo’s theories of how objects fall and proved Aristotle wrong. We conducted a fair test by dropping the same piece of paper folded into different shapes and measuring how long it took to fall. We established that it is air resistance, not weight, that effects the speed of the fall.

Next week, Year 5 are beginning Bikeability. You should have received some information which includes the dates and times that your child’s group will be participating. Children will learn how to ride a bike safely on the road. It will also be helpful practise before cycling on residential.

Enjoy your weekend,

The Year 5 team
