Farsley Farfield Primary School

Head teacher blog 1st December 2017

I was delighted to hear that a familiar face around our school was recognised for her outstanding contribution to young people this week. Mandy Parker is a former governor of our school and our most generous and longest-standing volunteer. She runs an after-school cycling club at school (and has done for over a decade!) and is an important part of our junior PE curriculum: so many of our children wouldn’t be able to ride a bike if it wasn’t for Mandy. She has now been awarded the BBC Yorkshire Unsung Hero award in the run-up to Sports Personality of the Year for her work with East Bradford Cycle Club and our school. What a star!

Other highlights this week have included ‘Sam the Sound Man’ visiting Year 4 in support of their science curriculum and 5 out of 6 of our cross country teams qualifying for the city finals after massive heats this week alongside 32 other schools. What is particularly impressive is our strength in depth: hardly any of our children were top ten finishers in their particular race but we had so many good runners that we did well in all the team competitions. Year 4 boys particularly excelled, winning their team competition with Pareen leading the way in ninth. I believe that each race had over 100 competitors: well done to all those that took part and good luck for the finals next year – keep training!  Thanks to the Friends of Farfield PTA for the new running vests! Parents might like to put the finals date in their diary if they would like to attend: Temple Newsam on Wednesday 21st February 2018, 12.30 arrival, first race 1pm.
