Farsley Farfield Primary School

WB 15.4.24

Welcome to the Summer term (it would be helpful if someone could inform the weather that the sun should be shining gloriously by now!). The children have been working hard on our new topics this week and the learning has been very hands-on.

English

In English, we have started to read The Hobbit. We began by studying the first chapter of the book and using Tolkien’s descriptive language to design hobbit holes. We then wrote our own descriptive paragraphs in the style of Tolkien.

Maths

We have now started our unit on perimeter and area. This is something that the children began learning in Y4 They are developing their understanding of how to find the length of missing sides and exploring different ways to find perimeter and area.

Geography

In Geography, we have started our unit on rivers. Children now have their knowledge organiser which includes the key ‘sticky knowledge’ for this unit. Much of the learning in this unit will be brought to life when children go on residential.

This week we have been recapping children’s learning about rocks, which will support their learning about the main stages of a river. Children have been sorting rocks into sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. We then created rocks using chocolate so children could see their similarities and differences.

Science

In science, children began learning about how to separate mixtures. They had to separate rice, flour, raisins, paper clips, pasta, plastic counters, and croutons without using their hands. They did this using a range of sieves, magnets, and fabric.

Music

In 5KH children have created graphic scores based on the theme of Heroes. We then worked together in teams to rehearse and perform some of the scores. Your child’s graphic score can be found on Charanga – please ask them to show you their work.

Links to videos of the children performing their scores can be found here and here.

Homework

This week children will have a sheet to complete in their homework book and maths tasks to complete on Mathletics.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 5 team
