Year 6 08.12.23

RE

This week Year 6 went on a trip to the Gurdwara. We were so lucky to be treated with kindness and learned a great deal about the Sikh faith. Gurmukh Singh Deagon welcomed us to the Gurdwara and told us about the golden temple in India. We heard a prayer from the Guru Granth Sahib and learned how Sikh children get their names. Gurmukh explained to the children about the 5 Ks which are a ‘uniform’ of the baptised Sikh. He showed the children examples of each one and even demonstrated turban tying on some of us! He then played the harmonium and we had a try before going down into the Langar Hall and sharing some wonderful food. The children had seconds (and thirds) of lentil dhal served with rice and chapatis – we had to encourage them not to fill up as they were due to return to school for lunch! We are very thankful to the Gurdwara for their hospitality.

Earlier in the week, Year 6 had a special visitor from Leeds United who cam to talk to us about the risks of social media and antisocial behaviour. The children learned about keeping themselves on the internet and how important it was to turn off location services as well as the harm in sharing photos of themselves in school uniform. They were all very responsible and had great ideas about how to keep safe online such as only accepting friend requests from people they knew in real life and keeping their profiles private.

From time to time through the year we would like to show Year 6 films which relate to our learning. An example of this is War Horse which we hope to show before the end of term as we are reading it in class currently. In order to do this we need your permission and to inform you of the films we hope to watch and their ratings.
