It is sometimes difficult to see clearly. Problems or challenges can distract us from the bigger picture that is overwhelmingly positive. In the past couple of weeks, I have received leadership reports from colleagues that have been comprehensive and really well-written but have barely mentioned our huge successes in inclusion and Y6 SATs results that were fantastic for the cohort as a whole and for vulnerable groups such as our children with SEND and those from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. I have also visited classes where I know there are challenges but there actually is brilliant teaching practice, excellent classroom management, great teamwork and impressive engagement. It is important to celebrate success and recognise the great job that people are doing, often in difficult circumstances. We are a hugely successful school and all the staff deserve great credit.
On Thursday, I chaired Leeds School Forum – the body that has an overview and some decision-making on education expenditure in the city. Things are looking grim as regards income and expenditure on ‘High Needs’ (SEND). One strategy paper forecast a cumulative overspend approaching a quarter of a billion pounds on SEND in Leeds within three years! At the same time, the government is looking to reform SEND provision. Prayers should be said for the poor schools minister that tries to introduce reforms to EHCPs and SEND provision. Needs and demands on these budgets are increasing massively and funding – whilst increased overall – is not keeping up at a city or school level. I don’t know what the answer will be but it is likely to be messy with a lot of emotion, heartache and challenge.
