In maths we have been continuing to explore the place value of numbers up to 10,000. We have been partitioning numbers in different ways, finding 1, 10, 100 or 1000 more or less, and looking at number lines up to 10,000. The work on number lines was quite tricky, but we have been really impressed with the children’s effort and determination. Here is a useful video for anyone who would like to go over this again.

Linked to our class text, The Firework Maker’s Daughter, we have been applying what we have learnt about explanation texts to write our own explanations about how to look after a royal white elephant. The children have been focusing on using paragraphs and sub-headings to organise their ideas, using causal conjunctions and using fronted adverbials. Some wonderful work has been produced and it has been lovely to hear the children’s creative ideas and to see the effort they have put in to meet the success criteria.

Geography
Our Geography work this half term is all about the United Kingdon. We have been naming and locating the different regions of the UK, using maps and atlases to help us. We also had fun trying to find some of the UK’s key cities on a map.

P.E
In P.E this week we had a go at some cross country running. Many children had not tried this before, and it was fantastic to see everyone giving it a go. Everyone managed at least one lap of the route, and some children did as many as ten! We will be choosing some children to represent Farfield at a cross country event in October. More information about this will be shared once we have selected the children for our Year 4 team.
A highlight for many children this week was swimming at Bramley Baths. The children represented Farfield brilliantly and did really well with their first proper lesson, showing good confidence in the water and listening well.
Reading and homework
Both Year 4 classes improved their Extreme Reading scores this week – well done!
Spelling and times tables homework have been sent home. Please can homework books be returned to school by Wednesday. Please encourage your child to use TT Rockstars to practise their times tables. 5 – 10 minutes a day using the different areas of TT Rockstars (jamming, studio, garage and soundcheck) would be really helpful.
