We have begun our English unit on traditional tales by exploring the story of The Little Red Hen. On Monday, we visited the school farm to observe the animals and collect some vocabulary. We looked to see if we had our own little red hen, then found some farmyard friends- the pigs and the goats. The teachers then used the children’s ideas to tell the story of The Little Red Hen. After sharing and comparing different versions of the story, children have enjoyed sequencing and retelling the story themselves.

Spelling
In spelling this week, we looked at all of the different ways to spell the oo sound. We also learned the homphones blue/blew, new/knew.
Maths
In maths we started the week with a new tricky concept- estimating numbers on a numberline. We then practised ordering and comparing objects and numbers using the symbols for greater than, less than and equal to.
Don’t forget to have a go at the activities set on Mathletics. These have been set to consolidate the work we have been doing in school.
PSHE and Science
This week in PSHE we talked about the importance of physical activity and sleep. We thought of lots of different ways we are physically active and observed how different types of physical activity made us feel. We ran and noticed how our heart rate and breathing changed, we did some squats and noticed our muscles getting warm and tired and took part in some yoga that slowed our breathing and helped us feel calm.
Children had lots of tips for a good night’s sleep. They suggested:
a book before bed
listening to calming music
switching off screens before getting ready for bed
In Science, we talked more about the physical activities we do out of school. We were amazed at how much the children do! We then thought about physical activity we can do at playtimes in the different areas of our school grounds.
Art- Still Life.
This week we used some vegetables from the farm as a subject for our still life work. We arranged the vegetables, sketched them and then used watercolour paints. It was a lovely calm session and the children really enjoyed using the paints.
