Year 5 Blog 8.9.23
What a fantastic week it has been in Year 5! The children have settled in well to their new (or not so new for 5HB) learning environments and have demonstrated extremely positive attitudes to learning. We are already looking forward to the many wonderful events and opportunities that Year 5 brings.
Maths
This week in maths we have started our unit on place value. Children began the week by learning two new Roman numerals (D and M) and used their knowledge to recognise years and write dates. Children always seem to enjoy working on Roman numerals and often approach it as ‘code-breaking’. We then moved on to learning about the place value of numbers with 5 digits. In this small step of learning, we revised the place value of numbers that the children encountered in Year 4 in preparation for looking at numbers to 100,000 and then 1,000,000.
A secure knowledge of place value will be essential if children are to be successful Year 5 mathematicians. To get a flavour of the learning we have been completing you may like to watch this brief video with your child.
English
In English, we have been planning and writing adventure stories, which the children have been very passionate and enthusiastic about! We began by looking at a range of interesting images for inspiration. Then, children picked an image that particularly inspired them and began to write a plan using a story mountain structure. Finally, the children were able to write their stories and were tasked with demonstrating the skills they were taught in Year 4. Together, we will use this writing to create writing targets so that the children know how to become even better writers. Targets are likely to be finalised next week and it would certainly we worth asking your child what their individual target is.
History
This week we started our new history topic- Ancient Greece. We began by locating modern day Greece on a map and finding out about it’s climate, culture and traditions. We have also shared the knowledge organiser with children. This includes all of the ‘sticky knowledge’ children are expected to learn and retain.
It would be extremely helpful if you could support your child with their history learning by using the Knowledge Organiser to regularly discuss their learning with them. You never know, they might be able to teach you a little bit about ancient Greek history!
Homework
In Year 5, homework will be sent home every Friday in a homework book, with an expectation that it will be returned on the following Wednesday. This gives children the chance to speak to their teacher about the work if they are finding it difficult. This week, children have a maths sheet on place value and spelling sheet which recaps some of the Year 3 and 4 common exception words.
