Addition, Active Voice and Alliteration.

Happy Friday! Here is a summary of what our Year 5 children have been learning this week, along with a few important notices for the coming weeks.

Maths

In Maths this week we have started our unit on addition and subtraction. We started by looking at mental strategies then moved on to the formal column methods. We have ended the week by learning about techniques that we can use to check if answers are sensible and correct. These include estimating and using the inverse operations. The video below can help with inverse operations.

English

Our work in English has focused on the grammatical aspect of newspaper reports. We have learned about passive and active voice. Newspaper reports often use the passive voice. An example of this is: Theseus killed the minotaur. (active voice) The minotaur was killed by Theseus. (passive voice).  We have also looked at direct and reported speech and how they can be used to tell a story. Finally we planned our report and so next week we will start to write then edit it.

History & Ancient Greek Day

The classes this week have been preparing for their Greek day next week by learning about some of the ancient Greek gods and constructing a timeline of the major events of the period.

Greek Day Reminder: Our Greek day is coming up next Tuesday! Please remember that costumes do not need to be elaborate or expensive—a simple bedsheet tied with a belt makes a fantastic toga.

Christmas Performance: Aladdin Trouble

Although we have only just started on October, we are already thinking about the Year 5 Christmas performance. This Year we will be performing Aladdin Trouble. Auditions for the main parts will take place next Friday and scripts have been sent home today for those wishing to try. If you think that your child may want to try, but hasn’t picked up a copy of the script (or has lost it), a copy of the lines can be found here. We often find that performing in the school play is a massive confidence boost, but also other role that are not on stage are ideal for others The lines to learn are the Aladdin ones. Any questions, please ask.

Sports Update

Next week will also see our first football match of the season. Over 35 children expressed a desire to play and so many will have to be patient but we will try to include everyone in the matches across the year.

On Monday, several children will make the short trip to Stanningley ARLFC to take part in a cross country competition. We have a very strong, competitive contingent from the year group going and hope to do very well.

Just a gentle reminder that as the weather gets wetter, children need a pair of indoor shoes so that the carpets do not get covered in mud and grass cuttings. Also a pair of wellies are very useful in very wet conditions to keep socks and feet dry.

Please give the blog a thumbs up.

Have a wonderful and restful weekend!

Warm regards,

The Year 5 Team
