Year 2 News 9.10.26

English

In English this week, we wrote our own alternative versions of the Little Red Hen story. The children followed their plans to write a story with a beginning, middle and end.

Spelling

We have looked at the ou/ow sound including homophone flower/flour and oi/oy.

Maths

We have started a new unit on addition and subtraction this week, starting with some work on number bonds and fact families.

Number bonds are the pairs of numbers that can make a particular number: e.g. all the different ways you can make 5

We also looked at fact families. This is all the addition and subtraction number sentences you can make for the same three numbers: e.g. 3 + 5 = 8

Homework this week is to show what you have learned about number bonds or fact families.

Walking to the Library

Having planned a route and used our local knowledge and Google Earth to think about what we might see, we set off on our walk around Farsley on Monday. Children spotted lots of human features including road signs, bus stops, shops, St. John’s Church and of course the Library. There were fewer physical features to spot, though some of us certainly noticed the hill on the way back!

At the library we met Librarian Keith, learnt about some of Leeds Libraries’ most unusual books, listened to a story and spent time reading books with our friends.

Thank you once again to the parent helpers who came with us.

Messy Maps

We had great fun creating our own messy maps of Farsley. We used what we had learnt from walking to the library to include key landmarks and consider direction and distance.

How to Stop the Spread of Germs

In PSHE this week we thought about what we can do to help stop the spread of germs. We talked about coughing and sneezing into our elbows and making sure that we wash our hands really well. We looked at some public health campaigns including posters and TV adverts used by the NHS and had a go at making our own.
