Maths
We’re continuing with our unit on addition and subtraction, focusing on subtracting crossing 10 and 100 this week. We began the week by using maths apparatus to work out different values, then moved on to the formal method and answered some reasoning and problem-solving questions. The children found crossing 10 quite tricky, so we spent some more time on it. Towards the end of the week, we worked on subtracting crossing 100 using the formal method and answering word problems with one and two exchanges.
English
This week, we learned more about Leon and his travels to the Place Between. We ended last week working on abstract and concrete nouns, and children used this to write down short phrases about the place between. Children then went on to write excellent setting descriptions using expanded noun phrases, alliteration and fronted adverbials. After editing the descriptions, children created beautiful doors with descriptions behind them to read to their adults. We will be spending some more time next week completing our doors before they are taken home to share!
How does light travel?
Our science unit, all about Light and Dark, fits in perfectly with this season. Children made small holes on different sides of boxes and tried their best to identify where the light was coming from and what they could see. They realised that the light was limited and it didn’t allow them to see everything in the box. After making more holes and noting their observations and class discussions, most children concluded that light travels in a straight line, since they could only see what was directly below the light.
DT
We’ve started a DT unit this term on linkages this week. Children learned more about different movements, including an oscillating motion and its purpose. We will be designing and creating prototypes for a shadow puppet show using our understanding of light and the theme of magic!
Geography – where in the world?
This week, we recapped our understanding of mountains and their features before moving on to how we can work out a mountain’s height using a topographical map. Children used atlases to colour in different heights, and added a key. They then used their Chromebooks to locate different mountain ranges on other continents.
