Year 1 News – 8.5.26

English

We have continued with our work on The Gingerbread Man. This week, we have focused on retelling the story. The children thought hard about the sequence of the story and used sentence openers, adjectives and conjunctions in their writing.

Our missing Gingerbread men have continued to travel around the United Kingdom. This week we have received postcards from London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. Where will they go next??

Plurals

We have been learning about plurals. The children learnt the following rules:

Phonics

We have continued to revise all the phonemes. The children are enjoying using Phonics Play. This is a free website that they can use at home to help them read lots of real and fake words.

Maths

We have started our unit of work learning about multiplication and division. This week we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

We have also been learning about equal and unequal groups.

Geography

This week, we have looked at the United Kingdom. We have learnt that the United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We have been naming and locating these on a map of the United Kingdom.

Science

We have investigated the enquiry question ‘What are the parts of a plant?’. We named the four main parts of a plant and labelled them.

Computing

The children have continued making their animated stories. They have added sounds and made their illustrations move. They are looking great! Your child can share their story with you at home on Purple Mash.

PPA Rotation

This half term, the children are doing the following lessons on a Friday afternoon:

RE with Mrs Thornton – Learning about belonging to a group

Cooking with Mrs Kenny – Making potato salad

Science with Mrs Jones – Learning about the life cycle of a frog

Science with Mrs Cairns – Learning about the life cycle of a butterfly

Rodley Nature Reserve

Thank you for all the offers of support for our visits to Rodley Nature Reserve. We are currently sorting out our staffing and we will let you know which parents are coming with us soon.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of you tomorrow at the PTA Dog Show. Miss Hardwick and Mrs Galbraith will be at the signing-in desk. The event starts at 12 o’clock. You don’t need to bring a dog! Come along and enjoy the fun!
