English- Instructions
This week we have been exploring instructional texts. Children have learnt that instructions need to be written (and followed) in order and that they use command sentences which begin with a bossy verb. Our usually wonderfully polite year 2s enjoyed dropping the please at the start of sentences to re-write them as commands!
We enjoyed following a set of instructions to fold jumping frogs and using bossy/ imperative verbs to label an obstacle course for our friends to try.
PE
We’ve taken advantage of the dry weather and have begun the year with some outdoor PE lessons. Both classes will be working on PE units looking at key skills including balance, jumping and changing speed and direction.
2MW will have PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
2La will have PE on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been learning about representing 2 digit numbers. Here we are using base 10 to make numbers using tens and ones and drawing tens and ones on a place value grid.
We have also done some additional ‘Mastering Number’ work. Here we are learning about ‘5 and friends’ looking at how to make the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 on our rekenreks.
PSHE and Science
We are thinking about keeping healthy this half term. The children have looked at the Eatwell Plate and we practised sorting foods into the different groups. Try the Eatwell Challenge at home!
Spelling
Did your child bring home their spelling activity on Monday? Every week will set a challenge for children to complete at home to help them practise the spelling pattern or rule we are learning in school. This week, we have learned some homophones with different ee/ea spellings e.g. meat/meet, bean/been, heal/heel. The children will need to bring this back by Monday for a dojo!
Geography
This week we looked at the four countries of the UK and their capital cities. We were very impressed that the children remembered this from Year 1!
Art
We talked about how lots of artists use food as an inspiration for their art. We did some observational drawings of apples. What a great job Year 2!
