Capacity and Claudius!
Maths
This week, we have come to the end of our unit on mass and capacity. Children reviewed their understanding of kilograms, grams, capacity, and volume, and used this to add different measurements together. Equivalence was discussed, and children compared different values using <, >, and =, then added reasoning to explain their ideas in more detail. Finally, children used their knowledge of litres and millilitres to help them add and subtract volumes.
English
This week, we enjoyed reading more of ‘Escape from Pompeii,’ and children learned more about how the city changed when the volcano erupted. Children worked collaboratively to write sentences that included an expanded noun phrase, a verb, and a prepositional phrase. Children were given words and phrases to work with and uplevel. These included ‘lava flowed, ‘lightning flashed, ‘ and ‘volcano exploded.’ We then moved on to writing a vivid description of the volcano, which included sentences that children worked on together.
Science
Children enjoyed sharing their ideas on plants and what they believe plants needed to grow. This included water, sunlight, air, oxygen, time and space. Children were surprised to learn that plants can survive in different conditions and at different temperatures. Children created fact sheets about different fruits and compared different conditions.
History
Who was Emperor Claudius? This week, we learned more about Emperor Claudius and the reasons he wanted to invade Britain, and why he attempted to invade it more than once. Children worked in pairs and groups before a class debate, discussing reasons for and against the invasion.
RE
Our unit in RE this term is all about inspirational leaders. In our first lesson, we discussed what makes a good leader. The children took turns being the leader in a game of ‘follow the leader’ and then discussed what made them effective (or not!) in their role. We then moved on to discussing different types of leaders, such as the King, Prime Minister or a headteacher and talked about what qualities these people need to be a good leader. The children listed qualities such as being a good listener, determined, fair and confident.
