6J Residential – Day 1
We have had a great start to our residential. The drive to Coldstones Cut was very smooth and once there, we had a lovely walk in the sun up to view the quarry.

Everyone was eager for the first group photo of the trip.
More photos from our journey can be found here.
We arrived a How Steen Gorge around 12:15 and ate lunch then quickly went into our first activities.
Group 1 – Caving
The group supported by Mr Beevers travelled the short distance to Manchester Hole at the head of the Nidderdale valley. The cave is a Level 1 cave, meaning it is ideal for an introduction to caving, although it still has its challenges and interesting areas. The group crawled to see a cavern full of fossils then climbed a mud slope, which required a lot of teamwork to complete – well done everybody!

Group 2 – via ferrata
After completing the practice course, group 2 attempted the via ferrata course – a high wire course over the top of the gorge. All the children made it to walk the beam with most of the group progressing further along the course. All the group were amazingly supportive of each other and Isabel even became the assistant instructor. We were very proud of all the group.

Group 3 – Gorge scrambling
Group 3 had a lovely time scrambling through the river at the bottom of How Stean Gorge after most of us abseiled 15 metres into the water. We explored the river, climbing waterfalls and even making our own waterslide! The group worked really well together, and really enjoyed celebrating all of our successes along the way. Layla particularly impressed the instructor (and Mrs du Preez) with her bravery on the abseil. Well done group 3!

After the activities we had tea while watching the match. Some of the class then left to relax outside while the rest “enjoyed” watching the whole of the England match.
Finally, we had a gentle stroll around the countryside. The class are currently settling down to sleep (hopefully).
