Reception news – 5.6.26

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful break. We are now in the last half term in Reception! Wow it has gone so fast.

Phonics

In phonics this half term the children will be learning new digraphs and new hard to read and spell words. We will introduce the children to the alternative spellings of some sounds they have already learnt.

This week’s new digraphs are: ay (ai) play, clay, tray, ou (ow) cloud, shout, pout, ie (igh) pie, lie, cried, ea (ee) sea, beans, peach.

Our new hard to read and spell words are – oh and their. Please keep practicing reading the hard to read and spell words using your flashcards which are sent home every week.

The children have started their new phonic booklets. In our handwriting we are practicing forming the letters u and y correctly.

This term..

Our book this term is ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’ We will be looking at and trying lots of different fruits and seeing where in the world/country they are grown. We will be learning about how fruit is a healthy food and reading facts about fruit.

Maths

This week we have focused on ordinality (considering where numbers to 10 are in relation to each other). The children have enjoyed playing practical games to reason about numbers and think carefully about which is more or less. They have used number tracks to play games that encourage them to compare numbers that are far apart, near and next to each other.

Understanding the World – Maps

This week we have learnt that Leeds is a city and it is an urban area. We have looked at the differences between Leeds city centre and Farsley Town Street. The children have drawn a map showing a part of Leeds.

Understanding the World – RE

This week we have started our topic on our world. We looked at the natural world and things that are man-made. We then went for a walk around our school grounds and paid attention to what we could see, hear, smell, and feel in the world around us. To finish with the children shared one thing they really like about the natural world.

PE

In PE we have started rehearsing for our sports day later this term. The children had lots of fun and are already very excited.

Sunny weather

As the weather improves please make sure your child has a named water bottle, hat and all day sun cream applied before school.

Stockeld Park

Don’t forget we have our last Reception trip coming up this month. RPT is on Monday 15th June and RKT is on Tuesday 23rd June. All children will need to bring a packed lunch and wear school uniform.

Everything else..

Have a super weekend. We will see you on Monday.
