Year 5 Blog 1/3/24

Good afternoon parents and carers,

We have had another successful week in Year 5.

English

The children have really enjoyed learning several descriptive techniques ready to use in their writing, including similes, metaphors, personification, noun phrases and adverbial phrase. The children have amazed us with some of their advanced language choices. Well done!

Maths

In maths we have finished work on fractions and moved on to decimals and percentages. Please can you ensure that your child completes the decimal activities that are set on Mathletics for homework.

Other subjects

5HB have been enjoying learning tag rugby skills in PE while another group of children have been developing their climbing skills at the Depot. In Science, 5HB completed a survey of the school grounds, looking at the materials used and any damage or corrosion of these materials.

5KH tested the hardness of different materials. We had materials ranging from rock to marshmallow, chocolate and butter. The children devised a fair test to test and compare the hardness of the different solids. Some children tested the force needed to change the shape while other groups used their scissors to conduct scratch tests. I was impressed that they all managed to restrain themselves from eating any of the experiment!

In Geography we have learnbt about lines of latitude and that the rainforests of the world are found between to Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer. Next lesson, we will continue to learn more about rainforests.

Next Thursday is World Book day and children have been asked to dress up as an adjective. Please see this letter for more information.

Enjoy your weekend,

The Year 5 team
