We’ve continued our exciting newspaper unit, this time putting ourselves in the shoes of Roman reporters on the day Mount Vesuvius erupted! After planning the layout, we worked in pairs to write our own newspaper articles. We worked hard to include headlines, paragraphs and dramatic witness statements like “The volcano just exploded in front of me!” We also used fronted adverbials to show time and tried our best with tricky vocabulary like eruption and volcano.
Maths
In maths, 3CW began a new unit on money. We’ve been learning to convert pounds and pence, as well as adding up amounts of money. Please keep talking to your child about money, helping them to use money and work out the cost of things much as possible. 3B were able to finish their unit on money by adding and subtracting amounts and even finding change.
Science
Our focus this week was on leaves and their very important job in helping the plant make food. We learned that leaves collect sunlight, carbon dioxide and water. We went outside to find our own leaf specimens and then labelled their parts—including the edge, veins, and midrib and petiole.
French
We wrapped up our unit on “Je peux” (I can) and “Je ne peux pas” (I can’t). Can your child remember any of the action verbs? Ask them how to say: I can/I can’t skip, cook, ride a bike, ice skate, sing, dance, swim, paint, play an instrument, or even speak French!
PSHE
In PSHE, we’ve been working through our unit on jobs. We’ve had some great discussions about money and the cost of things—would we buy expensive trainers or go for a cheaper pair? What supplies would we prioritise if we had a small classroom budget? This week, we explored different working patterns such as part-time, full-time, shift work and volunteering. We also talked about which job roles suit different people based on their skills and qualities. There were some very thoughtful answers and the children really enjoyed talking about their parents different jobs.
D&T
This week was purse-making week! Using our Roman purse designs, the children got to work stitching them together. It wasn’t always easy—there were some tangled threads and unravelled stitches—but they showed great perseverance. The children were so proud of their finished work and couldn’t wait to take them home! We managed to get a few lovely pictures for you all to look at.
