It’s been a great week in Year 3!
English
In English, we wrote adverts to encourage someone to visit the circus. The children showed a good understanding of persuasive techniques, such as rhetorical questions, alliteration and use of imperative verbs. 3SB had a go at using their Chromebooks to create a final draft of their adverts. We also learnt more about how to use a dictionary. The children enjoyed racing to find key words and then used the dictionaries to explore vocabulary from our class text.
Maths
In maths, our focus has been on column subtraction. The children have impressed us with how quickly they have got the hang of this method, and with their use of mathematical language when explaining their process. If anyone is still finding this method a bit tricky, this video explains how it works:
R.E
We were lucky this week to have a visitor in Year 3, talking to us about stained glass windows and their significance in Christianity. The children were very engaged during this session, and loved having the chance to create their own stained glass windows.
P.E
We were also lucky to have another dry(ish) Wednesday afternoon for P.E this week! Both classes are doing really well with their core curriculum element (gymnastics or athletics) and with their choice (either dance, football or cross country).
Geography
In geography this week, we learnt about topographical maps, and the way that colours are used to show the areas of higher land. We used atlases to help us create topographical maps of Europe and also began to talk about some well-known mountains around the world and their features.
PSHE
In PSHE, we have been talking about the impact of being kind or unkind to others. We used the story of the Rainbow Fish to help us. We also spoke about anti-bullying week, and we will be continuing to discuss bullying in our PSHE lessons throughout the half term.
Reading Challenge 2023-24
We have a new reading challenge for 2023-24! This year we would like children to read a book each month that fits in with a chosen theme. November’s theme is Light and Dark. Children can choose a book from the library or a book at home to read each month then add it to their chart, which will be assigned on Google Classroom. We will share examples of books for each theme in class to help give children ideas for what to read. When they have completed each monthly challenge, they can earn a dojo. At the end of the year, children who have completed all of the monthly challenges will be included in a prize draw! Good luck!
