Year 1 News – 22.5.26
English
We have continued writing our own version of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children did a fantastic job! They sequenced their stories well, included lots of brilliant vocabulary and tried hard with their punctuation and handwriting.

The children took a visit to see our very own Billy Goats on the school farm.

Phonics
We have continued to revise all the phonemes. The Year 1 Phonic Screening Check will take place during the week commencing Monday 8th June. They have all brought home some phonics activities to work through. Please encourage them to add sound buttons to the words and read exactly what is written, avoiding adding or missing sounds out. The video below is good for practising alien words.
A copy of the information that we sent home in March is below.
Suffixes
We have also been learning about suffixes. We have been writing words using the suffixes er, est and ing.
Maths
We finished our unit of work on multiplication and division. The children have been learning about making equal groups.

We have started our new topic on fractions. We have been learning about halves. We learnt that two halves make a whole and worked hard to find half of an object, shape and quantity.

Science
In science, we investigated the enquiry question ‘What is happening underground beneath our plants?’. We looked at the roots of our runner bean plants, a beetroot and a carrot. We discussed the function of roots and how the roots of different plants can all be very different.

How are your runner beans doing? Our class bean was 95cm tall this week!

Geography
In geography, we looked at the four compass points north, east, south and west. The children labelled the points of a compass and used compass points to give and follow directions.

Missing Gingerbread Men!
They have carried on with their amazing adventures. This week they have been to Japan, America and New Zealand. Our final postcard was from Australia. We also got a letter saying they have decided to stay there!

Our First Butterfly!!
1H have got their first butterfly. Mrs Galbraith is going to take all the cocoons home for the holiday. Keep checking your emails in case they all emerge!

Science Competition
Mrs Hawkhead emailed a letter about a whole school science competition earlier today. Year 1 are going to hold their class auditions on Wednesday 1st July.

We hope you have a lovely half-term.
