It has been a glorious week at Farfield: but dramatic too. Year 3 were enjoying a fabulous sunny Stone Age Day on Thursday when disaster struck. Stalking a ‘deer’ on a hunt with our bows and arrows, we accidentally stepped on a wasp nest in the long grass. The wasps defended themselves and, sadly, six children got stung – some multiple times. Neither staff nor children will ever forget their Stone Age Day. The ‘deer’ will wander onto the top field this morning and the Y3 stone agers are keen to resume their hunt at lunchtime today.

We thought we were stalking the ‘deer’ but did it lure us towards peril?

It has been a busy week for parent workshops, with both Reception and Year 1 having ‘in-person’ and remote meetings about how parents can support their children with early reading and phonics. One new initiative this year is sharing phonic flash cards with parents for use at home. As new sounds are learned in Reception, those flash cards will be added to a wallet in the children’s book bag and build up over the year. Playing with these cards at home could be a really helpful boost for children’s early reading.

Next week is Harvest Festival. This is a special event at our school as we also celebrate all the food that we have grown on our grounds. I think this will be the first Harvest Festival since 2019 – time to revive the Farfield tradition of a giant talking vegetable! What will it be this year…?
