Year 5 14.7.23
Good afternoon all,
Well I can’t believe that the school year is already coming towards the end and the children are nearing the end of Year 5. We have had a fantastic year so far with so much packed in and a very busy week this week. Both classes went to Malham where they enjoyed a fabulous day. It was a pleasure to take them and many members of the public commented on how polite the children were. Well done Year 5! We enjoyed paddling, map reading and a river study as well as climbing up the awe inspiring Malham Cove.

English
We have now finished writing balanced arguments and begun new work on non-sense-poetry based on the poem the Jabberwocky, which the children are really enjoying.
Maths
This week we have been converting metric and imperial measures, something that the children have found quite tricky as it involves a lot of tricky times tables and mental maths.
We learnt that:
- 1kg is approximately 2.2lb
- 1inch is approximately equal to 2.5cm
- That 1 pint is approximately 587ml
In Science 5KE worked on using levers while 5KH moved onto creating and using pulleys.
We had fun making pulleys out of curtain rings, metre rulers, sting and coat hangers with a kilogram weight attached. We found out that the more pulleys you add, the less force needed to lift a given weight of object.

Next week
Most of the children are very pleased that we have now finished giving out paper homework for the year.
Next week we are very excited to watch the Year 6 dress rehersal production on Monday afternoon.
We will therefore move PE to Tuesday if children would like to come in their PE kit on Tuesday.
On Wednesday we have Sports day all day and parents are invited to watch the competitive races on Wednesday afternoon.
On the last Monday of term we are planning to have a French fashion show as we have been learning about clothes in French this term. The children will commentate on each other as they walk down the cat walk. We will combine it with a small French cafe where the children have to order in French: chocolate chaud, croisaints, jus d’orange, pain au chocolate o Thé au lait.
Also next week you should receive your child’s report. Mr Harris is currently adding his head teacher’s comment to each one.
It’s going to be a busy end to the year!
