Ordering, Shortening and Measuring

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been another fantastic week of learning and discovery across Year 5! Here is a summary of what our pupils have been up to in class, along with a look ahead at what is coming up next week.

Maths: Mastering Large Numbers

This week in Maths, the children have been sharpening their place value skills by comparing and ordering numbers up to 1,000,000. Working with such large numbers requires careful attention to place value columns, and the pupils have shown great determination in mastering this concept.

Looking ahead: Next week, we will build on this foundation as we move on to rounding numbers. The children will practise rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000, and 1,000,000.

Below is a video that may help your child next week.

English: Epic Greek Myths

In English, our journey through ancient Greece continues! This week, the children created concise précis summaries of the famous story of Theseus and the Minotaur. To bring the dramatic narrative to life, the pupils performed freeze frames for each major part of the myth, working collaboratively to capture key emotions and pivotal moments. Photos of 5K’s freeze frames can be found here.

Looking ahead: Next week, we continue our Greek Myths topic with a child-friendly version of The Odyssey. The children will discover how Odysseus navigated his way through several challenging adventures on his long journey home.

Science: Exploring Our Solar System

Science lessons were packed with hands-on discovery across Year 5:

  • 5K took their learning outdoors onto the playground! Armed with metre rulers, they measured out and created a true-to-scale representation of the solar system, gaining a real sense of the vast distances between planets. Photos here
  • 5B focused on understanding space dynamics, exploring the concept of planetary orbits and investigating how the planets move around the Sun.

Thank you for your continued support! As always, please contact us if you have any questions or would like advice on supporting your child’s learning at home.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mr Beevers and Mrs Kroon
