Year 2 News- 16.10.26

English

This week we have enjoyed reading the book ‘Supertato’. We have worked on creating a simple book review and a character description.

We have been concentrating on developing our sentence structure. We have used the strategy ‘Think, Say, Write, Check’ to help us write accurate sentences, which are correctly punctuated and make sense. We have also been considering what we can ‘Add, Bin and Change’ to improve sentences. That might mean including a well chosen adjective or extending sentences with a conjunction like because.

In Art we designed our own ‘veggie’ superheroes that will star in our stories next week! We had lots of fun and they all looked amazing!

Spelling

In spelling, we have looked at all of the many different ways to spell the ‘or’ sound. We have learned the homophones: paw/ pour/poor and shore/sure.

Paired Reading

We enjoy paired reading in year 2, sharing a book with a partner and taking turns to read to one another. 2MW have been reading a book called Paper Engineers this week. It contained instructions for various paper crafts. Here are some photos of children folding paper foxes using the instructions in the book.

Maths

In maths this week we have been adding and subtracting ones. We have looked at a tricky strategy for adding which involves making a ten first. This BBC Bitesize page explains this well:

DT

We have done lots of investigating in DT this week. First we learned how to make a lever and a pivot to create a moving picture. Then we looked at a wheel mechanism to create these characters showing different emotions. Next week we will design and make our own moving picture using one of the mechanisms we have tried.
