Year 2 News 2.10.26

English

In English we have read the story ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’. We enjoyed listening to the story and then comparing it to the Little Red Hen. The children have practised some sentence writing using conjunctions to compare and have learned how to use the apostrophe for possession. We have planned our own versions of the Little Red Hen and next week we will have a go at writing our stories!

Spelling

This week we have been looking at the different spellings for the air phoneme. We have learned the homophones: hair, hare, where, wear, pair, pear etc.

Maths

We have completed our unit on place value this week with some work on counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s. Children had to work out missing and incorrect numbers in sequences and also applied their knowledge to solve problems.

Being able to count forwards and backwards from different starting points in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s is really important for our upcoming work on calculation and something you can practise in just a few minutes at home.

Design Technology

Inspired by the Little Red Hen, we decided to make our own bread! We talked about the ingredients needed, the different types of bread that we like and different types of flour. We then looked at the recipe before weighing, kneading and shaping our dough. The children enjoyed eating it at the end!

We also enjoyed creating some windmill pictures with moving parts. Next week we will be investigating more ways to create moving pictures using other mechanisms.

Science

In science this week, we talked about all the ways we keep clean. We talked about how often and when we should have a bath or shower, wash our hands, change our clothes and brush our teeth.

Celebrating our Strengths

In PSHE this week, we talked about our strengths and things we are proud of. We then considered other people’s strengths and children wrote each other certificates celebrating their skills, talents and qualities. Children wrote thoughtful and considerate things about their friends and were proud to be recognised by their peers.
