Year 1 News – 24.4.26

Welcome back to the last term in Year 1! The children have come back to school ready to learn and we’ve had fun starting some new, exciting topics.

English and Science

We started the week by enjoying the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We used the reading dogs to help us to answer questions about the story.

We later received a letter from Jack. He had left us some magic beans and asked us to plant them. We all planted our very own magic bean.

In our English lessons, we discussed what might be at the top of our magical beanstalk and worked hard to write some fantastic descriptive sentences containing lots of adjectives.

In our science lesson, we learnt that all plants start from a seed, bean or bulb. They need soil, water and sunlight to help them grow into a healthy plant. The plant then grows more seeds and beans and the cycle begins again. We spent time looking at and creating our own life cycle of a bean. We also planted a class beanstalk that we will measure over the half term.

Phonics

We have started to revise and practise all of the phonemes/graphemes we have learnt since we started in Reception. Some children are still not that confident reading words with all these phonemes in them. Please keep reading lots at home.

Maths

This week, we have been learning about mass. The children enjoyed using the balance scales to weigh various objects.

Geography

In geography, we have started our new topic on the world. We learnt that the world is split into seven continents and that a continent is a collection of countries. We have spent time naming and locating the continents on a world map.

We have also really enjoyed listening to this song!

PE with the Rhinos!

In our Thursday PE lesson, we enjoyed a striking and fielding session with a Leeds Rhinos sports coach. We will continue to enjoy these sessions for the rest of the half-term.

New Arrivals in Year 1!

The children were very excited when we got a parcel on Tuesday. Inside the box were caterpillars and stick insect eggs. We are going to look after them carefully and hopefully we will have some butterflies and Indian stick insects! Miss Hardwick has set up a live feed, ‘Caterpillar Cam’.

Pet Shop Fun!

The children are having lots of fun playing in our Pet Shops!

Class Photographs

1GC are having their class photograph taken on Tuesday. 1H will have their photograph taken on Wednesday.

Have a lovely weekend.
