Year 1 News – 5.6.26

English

In English, we read the story ‘Billy’s Bucket’. The children then used their imagination to think about what would be in their bucket and wrote a description of their setting. We had some brilliant writing with effective use of conjunctions and lots of adjectives.

Maths

We looked at quarters this week and the children learnt that finding a quarter means splitting a shape or an amount into four equal parts. Did you know that a quarter is a half of a half?

Science

We started our unit on animals this week. Our first lesson focused on looking at the physical attributes of different animals. Do they have fur? How many legs do they have? The children then worked in their hives to group different animals.

History

In history, we started our unit on seaside holidays in the past. We started by looking at pictures of the seaside today, 25 years ago, around 50 years ago, and around 100 years ago and placed them on a timeline.

Science Lab Fun!

The children are enjoying our new role-play areas. They are having fun creating their own potions!

Rodley Nature Reserve

1GC are going to Rodley Nature Reserve on Tuesday 9th June.  

1H are going to Rodley Nature Reserve on Thursday 11th June.  

The children can come to school in non-uniform, ideally leggings or tracksuit bottoms. We will be outside all day. Please can you ensure that your child is wearing appropriate footwear and a raincoat or sun hat/sun cream, depending on the weather forecast! There is no charge for this trip, but your child can put a donation in the collection box at the reserve. The children need a packed lunch. (Please do not pack any nuts in your child’s lunch).

Lion Learners

To enhance our animal science topic this half term, we have arranged for a company called Lion Learners to deliver an exciting workshop with an array of different animals on Wednesday 1st July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 children – they certainly will get up close and personal to these creatures. To cover the cost of the workshop, we are asking for a contribution of £3.62 per child, please. Please pay using our online payment system – ParentPay by Friday 26th June.  If you need a reminder of your login details, please contact the office.

Homework

There is no homework this week. Please hear your child read and practise all the phonemes ready for the screening check next week.
