Rodley Nature Reserve

The highlight of our week has been our trip to Rodley Nature Reserve. Both classes had a wonderful day and it was fantastic to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic in all of the activities.

We started the day with a nature walk around the reserve. There were lots of tiny frogs everywhere – we had to be careful where we stood! We also saw lots of slugs, snails and even a dragonfly. We spent time in the hides and saw lots of wonderful birds. We collected things throughout our walk to create our own wonderful pieces of artwork on sticky boards.

We all enjoyed lunch, then completed a rotation of three activities in the afternoon.

We thoroughly enjoyed pond dipping. The children were fantastic at finding a variety of different creatures, including snails, beetles, water boatmen and dragonfly larvae.

The children also enjoyed making bug hotels and a hibernaculum.

Thank you to all the volunteers who came with us. We hope you enjoyed your day at the nature reserve.

Phonics

We have completed the Phonics Screening Check this week. We are very proud of how hard the children have worked in phonics throughout the year. Your child’s score will be shared with you in their end of year report.

Maths

In maths this week, we have been looking at position and direction. The children have looked at how to describe turns and use the language of left, right, forwards, backwards, above and below to describe position and direction. We finished the week looking at ordinal numbers, including 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th to describe position.

Science Superstars

The children are very excited about the science competition. We are holding our class auditions on Wednesday 1st July.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
