Farsley Farfield Primary School

A sunny start to the term!

Maths
This week, we have continued with our learning of mass and capacity. We began the week by recapping grams and kilograms and used this to compare different masses and reason the weight of different objects when the scales changed. Using our understanding and the column method, children added and subtracted different masses. Towards the end of the week, children began to compare mass and capacity. They used their understanding of timelines and the concept of dividing into intervals to work out different volumes in litres and millilitres.

English
We have a brilliant new text for our summer term, and children began the week by making inferences based on the cover of ‘Escape from Pompeii’. Using see, think, and wonder, children enjoyed sharing what they could see on the cover, what it made them think, and any questions they had following this. Some of our predictions included.

Who are the children? How did they get on this boat? Were they escaping? Is the volcano loud? How did they get on their boat? Where are their parents?

We have started reading the text, and the children enjoyed mind-mapping the beautiful setting of Naples and wrote down short phrases that included expanded noun phrases. They then used this to write a setting description using prepositions, verbs and expanded noun phrases.

Science
Our new unit is about plants. Children enjoyed looking closely at parts of a flower and were fascinated by its texture and what they could see when examining it further. Children discussed the parts of a flower and a plant that they already knew and recognised before learning more about the different parts and their significance.

History
Year 3 have been looking at maps this week as part of the unit on the Romans. This week, the focus was on maps, and children learned a little about the reasons why the Romans invaded and where they invaded. We compared maps and identified differences and similarities, including different country names. Using this, children labelled maps to highlight some of the places that were invaded.
